Reasons For Moving originated in 2005 as a group formed primarily to create a recording led by Darren Johnston, and performed a couple of times in that period. The core of the band consists of trumpeter Johnston, guitaristFred Frith, and saxophonist Larry Ochs, who were originally joined by bassist Devon Hoffand Ches Smithon drums.
The all-improvised recording was released on Not Two Records to wide praise, but the band then went dormant, with only occasional performances, although the core in particular has played and recorded together in many other settings over the years.
With an invitation from curator Phillippe Ochem of Jazzdor Festival in Strasbourg, France to play the festival in November 2018, the core group reformed, and with help from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, are looking forward to finally taking Reasons for Moving to Europe, where they will be joined by French bassist Sebastian Jeser and Swiss drummer Sam Duehsler.
This Festival Jazzdor appearance is supported by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through USArtists International in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Watch this space and the EVENTS column for news of other concerts in Europe. Just yesterday, we received confirmation of a November 11, 2018, concert at Music Unlimited 2018 in Wels, Austria, one of the oldest and most interesting festivals focusing on improvised music in all genres.
In preparation for this trip, Ochs, Frith and Johnston set up a show under the “Reasons For Moving” banner in January of 2018 at San Francisco’s beloved Bird and Beckett Books and Music, where they were joined by Brooklyn-based drummer Allison Miller. It was a sold-out evening of stunning music, a collaboration that hopefully sets up the European tour for artistic success.
